Looking back / 2020

When we couldn’t meet up,
we could still team up.

During COVID-19 lockdowns, online games became a place to chat, share a challenge and spend time with friends from home. That sense of connection is part of the inspiration behind Player Two.

A space to connect.

Of UK online children aged 5–15 played games online in 2020. Ofcom described how this let them socialise and chat with friends while apart.

Something to get through it.

Of gamers agreed gaming helped them get through lockdown, according to UK research reported by Ofcom. This was a personal assessment, not a clinical measure.

A difficult time for wellbeing.

Of adults in Great Britain experienced moderate to severe depressive symptoms in June 2020, compared with 9.7% before the pandemic (July 2019–March 2020).

These historical figures describe different populations and measures. They do not show that gaming prevents or treats depression. For Player Two, the takeaway is the value of welcoming spaces, shared interests and balanced play.

Different countries. Same team.

A little closer to home.
One game at a time.

Moving abroad doesn’t have to mean leaving game night behind. For expats, online gaming can be a way to catch up with friends back home, share familiar banter and spend time together across borders.

It’s another reason we want to help people feel comfortable picking up a controller: so distance, or being out of practice, doesn’t have to get in the way of joining in.

A purpose beyond play

Good for the game.
Good for people.

Connection matters. We’re building Player Two around shared enjoyment, belonging and a positive approach to gaming — with mental health at the heart of our social purpose.

GIVING BACK

Supporting mental health.

A portion of our profits will go to charities and projects focused on mental health.

BUILDING FORWARD

Reinvesting in Player Two.

The rest will go back into Player Two, helping us improve the platform, support our community and widen access to coaching.

We’ll share the allocation and the causes we support as the business develops.
